According to the European Union’s climate monitoring agency, 2023 was recorded as the hottest year in global history, with an average global temperature of 14.98°C—1.48°C higher than pre-industrial levels. During COP28 in 2023, participating nations unanimously agreed to “transition away” from fossil fuels in a “just, orderly, and equitable” manner to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 following scientific pathways. Furthermore, the EU and 118 countries jointly launched the “Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge,” aiming to triple global renewable energy capacity and double the average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. Without significant adjustments to global greenhouse gas emissions and uncontrolled energy consumption, the 2°C temperature limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement will soon be exceeded.

In Taiwan, the National Development Council’s 2050 Net-Zero Roadmap envisions renewable energy accounting for 60–70% of total power generation, complemented by 9–12% hydrogen energy, along with 20–27% thermal power generation equipped with carbon capture technologies to ensure energy security while decarbonizing the overall power supply. However, according to the annual Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), which evaluates major GHG-emitting countries, Taiwan’s performance in 2024 declined by four positions compared with 2023, ranking 61st overall, with most categories rated as “very poor” or “poor.” As a member of the global community, Taiwan bears an unavoidable responsibility in addressing climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing energy efficiency.

Global geopolitical and economic conditions grew increasingly volatile in 2023. The Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East conflicts escalated, the United States continued aggressive interest rate hikes, Europe faced de-industrialization risks, and worldwide supply chain restructuring intensified downward economic pressure. Within Taiwan’s solar industry—impacted by the election climate, steep declines in raw material prices, and excessive inventory in the U.S. and European markets—the sector once again confronted challenges stemming from macroeconomic and supply chain disruptions. Adhering to our operational principles of energy creation, storage, and conservation, United Renewable Energy (URE) continues to enhance solar energy conversion efficiency to increase power generation per unit area and reduce production costs. In 2023, our solar products generated 1.257 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to reducing 622,237 metric tons of CO₂ emissions—comparable to the annual carbon sequestration of approximately 1,610 Daan Forest Parks.

In energy storage, URE partnered with Taiwan Power Company to establish a 20 MW storage system at the “Tainan Salt Field Solar Station,” creating the nation’s first Taipower-implemented solar-plus-storage facility. Regarding energy conservation, through continuous improvement in production and R&D processes, URE achieved energy savings of 11,728.1 gigajoules in 2023. Our total greenhouse gas emissions (tCO₂e) decreased by 31.5% compared to 2022, demonstrating our firm commitment to energy efficiency.

As a leading manufacturer of solar cells, solar modules, and solar power generation systems, URE has always upheld the vision of making solar energy accessible to every household, with a mission to deliver clean energy that is both sustainable and affordable. Through our system engineering business model and strong module brand, we actively develop solar power plant construction and asset management services. Our outstanding global project teams provide localized engineering, development, and construction services in multiple countries, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, modern energy for all. While striving for operational growth, we also promote concepts of green energy, energy conservation, and environmental protection to customers, partners, users, and the public, fulfilling our responsibilities to shareholders, employees, society, and the environment.

Looking ahead, URE will continue strengthening Taiwan’s solar industry competitiveness through our system business and module brand, in alignment with national energy policies. With government support and renewable energy initiatives, URE aims to assist Taiwan in achieving its cumulative solar installation target of 20 GW by 2025. Our products and operations continue to earn recognition from domestic and international certification bodies, reinforcing our leadership in the renewable energy sector.

Corporate sustainability has become a core management philosophy at URE. We recognize the importance of transparently disclosing our performance in corporate governance, employee and social engagement, partnership development, and green energy and environmental protection to stakeholders and the public. We continuously evaluate the integration of sustainability into our business strategies to ensure alignment with societal expectations.

URE firmly believes that employees are among the company’s most valuable assets. We strive to cultivate a workplace built on mutual trust and respect, attract top talent, and maintain a safe and supportive work environment. We promote equality by ensuring equal pay for equal work, offering diverse opportunities, providing comprehensive training programs, and maintaining open communication channels to create a thriving future alongside our employees. Although COVID-19 subsided in 2023, employee health remained a top priority. We enhanced on-site preventive measures—installing temperature scanners, partitions, sanitizing stations, alcohol dispensers, and regularly distributing medical masks and health-related information.

As a responsible corporate citizen, URE continues to contribute to society through long-term community engagement. We regularly invite social welfare organizations, such as the Children Are Us Foundation, to host events on our premises, and we provide support for disadvantaged children in remote areas of Hsinchu, alongside donations to various charity groups. In late 2023, we encouraged employees to join the “34th Homeless Banquet – Warm Meal Charity Campaign,” helping those in need receive essential support. We also donated high-efficiency solar panels to the Ali-Bang Ecological Farm operated by the Taiwan Environmental Information Association, enabling the farm to participate in the energy transition and reduce carbon emissions. URE will continue contributing to society and the planet through diverse, meaningful actions.

Looking toward the future, advancements in solar photovoltaic technology will be crucial to sustaining life on Earth. URE will lead Taiwan’s solar industry into a new era—Solar 2.0—anchored in a business model driven by system engineering and module branding. We are committed to fostering a resilient and thriving green energy sector rooted in Taiwan, building upon our established leadership to drive sustainable growth.
